You can take several precautions to make your business less vulnerable to criminal conduct from within as well as outside:
Internal crime
- Get an insurance policy that covers employee theft, fraud, and outside crime.
- Create a formal, written ethics policy.
- Foster a culture of honesty by training employees to speak up when they encounter problems.
- Screen applicants carefully before hiring (e.g. do background checks, drug testing and conduct tests that indicate one’s level of integrity).
Outside crime
- Keep minimal amounts of cash on premise; put excess cash in a safe.
- Make bank deposits at various times and uses; vary the route to the bank.
- Don’t schedule an employee to work alone.
- Make sure your location is well lit and consider installing a security system.
- Inform the local police station of your business hours.
